Lisbon Historic Core Walking Tour

Look up at the two square towers. They are not graceful in a delicate way. They are heavy, crenellated, watchful. Lisbon Cathedral looks like a church that remembers danger.

Lean on the railing and look down. Alfama does not arrange itself for you. It tumbles.

Before looking up, look down. The pavement seems to move under your feet: black basalt and white limestone laid in waves. This calçada portuguesa has become one of Lisbon’s visual signatures.

Look up at the iron tower. It rises from the flat Pombaline grid like a piece of Gothic fantasy that accidentally became public transportation. Lisbon is beautiful partly because it is inconvenient.
