From the street, Livraria Lello looks like an ornate townhouse squeezed into a narrow corner. Then the door opens, and the mood changes. Red stairs curve upward like a ribbon.

Walk into the main hall and stop before the tiled walls. Most travelers arrive expecting a train station. Then they look up and realize they have entered a national storybook.

Stand before the cathedral and notice how little it tries to please you. The walls are thick. The windows are narrow. The towers are square and heavy.

Stand before the Palácio da Bolsa and let the change in tone register. After the cathedral’s granite severity, this building speaks a different language.

Before entering, look at the exterior. Plain granite. Narrow Gothic windows. A façade that seems almost severe after the Palácio da Bolsa. The church does not advertise what it contains.

You have reached the river. After towers, churches, books, tiles, and palaces, Porto suddenly opens into color and water. Houses stand shoulder to shoulder along the Douro.
