Málaga Historic Core Walking Tour

Enter slowly through the gates and courtyards. The Alcazaba does not reveal itself all at once. It turns, narrows, opens, turns again.

Stand before the semicircle of stone seats. The Roman Theatre sits at the foot of the Alcazaba, as if two different ages of Málaga had been stacked in one view. Above: Islamic walls.

Look up at the unfinished tower. Málaga Cathedral is known affectionately as La Manquita — “the one-armed lady” — because its south tower was never completed.

Stand before the entrance and notice the great horseshoe arch. It looks older than the market around it because it is older.

Walk onto Calle Larios and let the city straighten out around you.

Stand in the square and let the space widen around you. Plaza de la Merced is one of Málaga’s great civic rooms.

Stand near the water and look back toward the city. Gibralfaro rises above everything, the Alcazaba folds into the slope, the cathedral marks the center, and the port holds the city open to the sea.
